Hero Is Alive

Nick Vujicic = Motivation

Richie Parker  = Inspiration

Hero = A True Hero

In recent years, I had gained lots of motivation and inspiration from these people. I guess, I need to rewrite the part where I said ‘people’. Because it turns out that it’s not just people alone who have played a part in my spiritual development. As I watched and read about Richie Parker’s life story months ago, it was something out of this world and it kept playing in my mind. As I listened to Nick Vujicic’s speech, I started realizing that all these people with disabilities are astonishingly strong-willed because they don’t perceive themselves as disabled. They don’t compare themselves with others and dwell on what they lack. In short, there is no room for self pity.

And then comes the late great Hero, also known as Iyo. The two-legged cat that has inspired many. I’m one of them. His passing a few weeks ago is still a shock to the animal lovers community in Malaysia. Hero’s story had been highlighted time and time again in various media. Hero was the unfortunate kitten whose limbs were severed for stealing fish, and dumped on the road about 8 years ago. Little did anyone know that this incident will prove to be a turning point for the animal lovers community, and in particular for one individual, my dear brother, comrade, Mohd Hairey. Over the years Hero had given belief and hope to many of us that any abused animal can be saved if you set your heart to save them. PTS should only be the last of last of last option. That’s exactly what Hairey, better known as Papa Hero (PH), has proved to us through saving Hero. It’s hard to believe, how a cat can bring so much changes into one’s life.

A really heartbreaking photo posted by PH on the day Hero passed away. It went viral, with condolences
pouring in from everywhere. It was a sad sad day.

When I first met Hero, I saw how strong-willed he was. His physical strength to walk and to get on with his life with only hind legs was remarkable. Reading about Hero is one thing, but as you watch his maneuvers, it strikes you. The way he asks for petting, they way he climbs the stairs and they way he reaches places even I can’t reach. You watch in awe. In his eyes, he doesn’t believe he’s disabled. He doesn’t even know that he’s one. Now that is the grit and tenacity that separates anyone from self pity. I saw a similarity in the case of Parker and Vujicic. It’s a reminder for all of us to stop complaining about our lives and dwell on what we don't have. Ironically, it’s another moment, when I learned a lesson about life, through animals.

Hero has garnered a legion of fans. His life has been a living testament and reminder to the plight against animal abuse in Malaysia. The heart-rending story of Hero even stole the attention of lawmakers in the Parliament recently. Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique cited Hero’s case to highlight the issue of animal welfare and cruelty against animals, in the Dewan Rakyat. Hero has undoubtedly became a symbol for a battle. A battle that had long been kept in the shadows and seen as trivial. I told a friend, “I don’t think so, that when I die one day, I’ll have this many people mourning for me”.  Yes, it’s true. It may sound unreal, but that's what it is. Such was the impact of a cat.

PH could not contain his emotions when speaking about Hero on live TV broadcast

Haters? I know there are indeed many disabled cats and dogs out there in Malaysia, probably in worse conditions. I've seen it for myself too. But I’m only talking in terms of impact. How the social media like blog and FB were used to spur the public to follow suit and take part in animal rescue efforts. How Hero's suffering was not passed on just like another normal incident. It takes a lot of effort to maintain a blog and encourage the people around you to stand up and be the voice for the voiceless. It takes a lot of effort to continuously do it, and not just a seasonal outcry. So indeed, there are other cases. But Hero's plight was heard loud and clear. It’s like someone dissing,  "Eleh.. my grandfather is more noble and greater than Mahatma Gandhi, but he didn’t like publicity. So nobody knows him". No, it doesn't work that way. At the end of the day, it’s how you made a difference. Not how you were indifferent!

I truly believe that Hero is still alive within many who were inspired by him. He still lives in the spirits of a person called Papa Hero. Without Hero, maybe there isn’t a Papa Hero and all the battle he started against animal cruelty. Hero still lives in the NGO set up after his name, Pertubuhan Aktivis Haiwan. Hero lives, when one day you find a badly injured cat or dog, you see hope and miracle.

Hero will be alive in our fond memories. Take care Hero, you are in a better place now...

Morals In Murals

Something presumably different this time. There was plenty of controversy last week pertaining to Lego figurines and graffiti art in Taman Molek, Johor. Yes, this one.

If you've missed the drama, I'll simplify it.

Lithuanian mural artist, Ernest Zacharevic made waves in the southern state last week, after drawing this piece of art. He said the art was just a true reflection of the crime rate in the state, and a sign of awareness for the people to be careful at all times. It became an instant hit. Lots of people started visiting the wall and took pictures with it.

However, the officials found the art truly offensive, adding that it gave a bad impression of the state to tourists. As a response, Zacharevic added a flower bouquet and posted this on his Facebook, calling it a "politically correct" version of his artwork. "There is nothing that flowers could not cover!" he said.

Long story short, the authorities adjusted the art initially by adding a policeman.

Then they whitewashed the art altogether by painting over it.

The best part was when the social media went buzzing over the issue. Everyone started to 'remake' the mural with their version as an idea to keep the street art there without offending anyone LOL. Here are some of them.

Being a fan of Lego, murals and of course an animal lover, here's my edited versions. Just for fun :D

The Doggy Version

The Kitty Version

Well, I have friends in Johor and according to many of them (not generalising), the crime rate in the state is quite frightening. Some of them have already become victims. Here's how a fellow friend described it. "In JB, I see my own shadow also I'm scared bro". I know it's not funny, but I really laughed when he said that.

There are also friends who asked me to look for trained guard dogs after their houses being broken into a couple of times. Some even (jokingly) asked me to pinjam my very own Defence Minister, Quando. Cannot lah, no way! haha..

On that note, I'd like stress that I don't quite like the idea of people getting dogs after their houses are broken into. You don't keep a dog because you're insecure. The rule of thumb is, you only get a dog if you really love dogs. That should come first. Same with any other pets. It's a relationship that comes with love and commitment. And what happens when the guard dog you bought doesn't turn out to be a good guard like you expected? Dump him and get another one? Listen, there are many other things you can invest to boost security. CCTV cameras, security alarm, improve relations with your neighbours and more.

Nevertheless, I guess crime is arguably rampant everywhere, and not just in Johor alone. Hence, it's important for us to remain vigilant and be extra cautious. Perhaps, in my opinion, if you see an art like this, it works as a better reminder than those cliche public service announcements (PSA) or pesanan khidmat masyarakat, which the government spends a lot money to put on TV and radio.

And one thing I'd like to ask the authorities...

If this mural above gives a bad image of our country to tourists, then why bother putting signs like this?

Dear logic,
Rest In Peace

Halloween Post - 20 Pawesome Pet Costumes

Halloween is here again and it's an exciting time for those who don't like to be themselves! *cricket noise*

I mean like really....I don't quite want to delve into the whole significance thingy. But I'll tell you this, what I discovered from my school days was, Halloween is a day to dress up in costumes and be somebody else. So for me, it's like a day for escapism. To be honest it's really fun. Subsequently, pet lovers have taken this tradition to their furkids in order to enjoy the celebration together.

So here I have the 20 Most Pawesome Pet Costumes.

20.  His majesty looks really handsome in this. Narnia inspired!

19. This bunny supposed to be Robin. But it looks more like a bank robber here.

18: Harry Potter and Fluffy

Every night after work, I'll usually feed stray dogs here and there. But if I see a dog like this somewhere, I swear I lari tak cukup tanah. Scary wei..

17: First time I see geese dressed up like this. Really Adorable! Although the big ass and vibrant colours kinda remind me of Nicki Minaj.

16: The Disinterested Race Horse

I reckon the race format must be changed to race for food?

15.  The Great White Shark

Imagine if sharks have hard shells..I think everyone in the movie 'Jaws' would have died.

14.  A Pile Of Leaves

This is probably the most ridiculous costume ever. I laughed so hard at this. I love the 'do I look like I care about creativity' attitude in this. This costume is particularly good for surveillance and camouflage. Imagine thieves jumping over your fence and then suddenly that pile of leaves in the garden wakes up and chases them. LOL.

13.  The Reluctant Bride

A look like this on wedding day, makes every divorce lawyer happy. No?

12. I don't care who he's playing...

This gentleman here, hats off sir!

11. The Pirates. LOL

Just stealing some stuff. Must be the treats from my cabinet.

10. Tiger

The friendliest tiger you'll ever meet. He wants cuddles. Beware!!

9.  Spider Pup

This one comes with the caption from the owner. I love it!!

8. The King of Jungle

Curiousity kinged the cat

7. The Zombie Dog

If there's one animal that can wear this costume to perfection, it has to be the Basset Hound. Their droopy eyes and 'zombiefied' look can never go wrong in this avatar. Real badass costume for Halloween!  Look at his face. Really menjiwai watak habes!

6.  The Skeleton Horse

Think about this horse running at night somewhere. People who see it from some distance will have a story to tell their grandkids.

5.  Elvis Presley

The King of Rock and Roll. I can tell that the legend himself is smiling in his grave looking at this. Let's rock this party people jjyeah!!!

4. Thor

Personally I'm a fan of the Thor film, and this is just super cuteeeeee...hahaha. Look at him. Since, this Halloween falls on Thursday, I would like to call it a Thorsday instead! :DD

3. Pandog

I can safely say that everyone loves panda. Like, who can hate a panda right? And since pandas are rare and threatened by extinction, God thought about it and created Chow Chows. The pups are so pandy and uncanny! Look at them lah.. OMGGGG!!

2. PiCATchu

Siren...........Pokemon fan alert! Pikachu has to be one of the cartoon characters that made a huge mark across the globe. If you're taking this baby to a party, make sure you practice a No-Borrow-Policy. Because once someone pinjam to cuddle,  people are going to run away with it. How to resisttt.....

1. Alligator Dog Mermaid?

Wait..like what do you even call this costume? LMAO

For me, this costume bags the number one spot simply because it's so creative and like WTF. It's a real head-turner. Thinking of how it will look like when the dog is running is just hilarious. One poor thing though, when the dog takes a crap, the crocodile will look like an organic Indah Water.

And there you have it. My list of 20 Pawesome Pet Costumes. Of course there were others, but these are the ones that really caught my attention for each of their unique wackiness.

Let me know what's your personal favourite too!

Happy Halloween fursians :)
